The Goal of the BellyGram to Serve as a Resource for Belly Dancers and Present Information Embellished with the Spirit of Dignity and Grace

We are Extremely Honored and Excited to Feature:

Babi Habibi

Greetings to All in Shimmy Land.

I'd like to begin this series with the basics, just like a beginners class, as well as some personal perceptions on the subject of Belly Dancing. Through the series I am going to cover as many topics as are questions, plus more.

You will find that the web site, The Belly Dance Movement, and it's contents have been created for you- the students of the art. By the phrase 'students of the art' I mean all of those (us), who may be thinking of trying out a class for the first time or to those of vast experience. The Belly Dance Movement and my column, Babi Habibi, will be in constant evolvement, and hopefully become a resource for those of our community.

I am also open to comments and ideas.
What do you need?
What questions do you have?
How can I help you with whatever it is you are looking for?
Do you have a web site that you would like considered for review or inclusion? Have you purchased a DVD or CD that you think would benefit others?
Do you have an event that you would like me to discuss or have posted ?
Have you found a site that has new and/or exciting costumes, sewing ideas or    information for us, the Belly Dancer?
Is there a specific subject that you would like me to write about?

I want the list to be endless. Let me know these things and I will certainly do my best to find answers and pass this information along.

Do you get the idea? Great!

Gotta Go, Gotta Go Shimmy,

Babi Habibi

Editors Note:
Babi Habibi's column will be a regular inclusion to The BellyGram, and we look forward to her input, opinions, reviews, articles and whatever else she has in store for us. The information she presents is based on her experience as a Middle Eastern Dancer, and we encourage you to correspond with her with your ideas, questions and thoughts.

As time goes on, we will expand and grow and hope you continue to accompany us on our journey as we contribute to:

The Belly Dance Movement

Why We Dance
by Arabecca

There is nothing more mesmerizing than drums in rhythm with a heartbeat. Across the centuries, across all cultures this magnetic pull calls to our very core. This is why we dance.

Middle Eastern dance is an art form that stretches back thousands of years. It can't be said to be enjoying a resurgence- as it has never gone out of style. Many of us have embraced this movement for its free-style grace. We are drawn to the rich colors and fabrics of the costuming, shiny bangles and coins, exotic music, and the aura of mystery that surrounds the culture.

And face it- the physical benefits of belly dance are pretty impressive. An hour of intense dance is an aerobic work out that will really get your heart moving. Of course, you will also discover muscles you aren't aware of. This is not to say that all Belly Dancers end up looking like Shakira. We come in all shapes, size, age and ability. That is the beauty of it. While many compete and perform, many more dance for personal pleasure and enjoyment.

Belly Dance is more than physical. It touches the spirit and emotions of the dancers in so many ways. It can be passionate, fiery, joyful, and whimsical. The interpretation of music through movement stretches the soul. When we dance, we are part of the rhythm of the universe. This is Why We Dance.
